No. 1 CSM wins 17th straight with 29-7 victory at No. 18 Foothill
LOS ALTOS HILLS – Freshman BJ Thurman hauled in a pair of touchdown receptions while sophomore Dieter Kelly booted a pair of field goals to help lead No. 1 state-ranked College of San Mateo to a 29-7 win at No. 18 Foothill College on Saturday night.
The National Bay 6 League victory extended the Bulldogs' winning streak to 17 games. The defending state champions remain perfect this season at 7-0 and lead the Bay 6 with a 2-0 mark.
San Mateo allowed an early touchdown in the first quarter before taking over the rest of the way. The Bulldogs earned a safety at the 14:03 mark in the second when Foothill's Anthony Alonzo was tackled in the end zone by Charleston Waugh. That play began a string of 29 unanswered points by the Bulldogs.
Thurman connected with quarterback Luke Alexander for this first touchdown, a 35-yarder to close out the Bulldogs' ensuing drive. Kelly was good from 25 yards out and San Mateo went into halftime with a 12-7 lead.
Jalen Arnold ran in from nine yards out for another CSM touchdown with 8:07 to go in the third and Alexander found Thurman again for another long touchdown, this time for 49 yards, to extend the Bulldogs' advantage to 26-7.
Kelly closed out San Mateo's scoring with his 22-yard field goal with 5:25 left in the contest to seal the victory.
The CSM offense put up a season-high 451 yards as Alexander threw for 215 yards. He completed 16 of 29 passes with a pair of touchdowns and one interception. Thurman totaled 104 yards on 3 receptions with 2 TDs and Ali Collier led with 13 carries for 75 yards.
The Bulldogs' defense limited Foothill to 119 yards and gave up just nine first downs. CSM terrorized quarterback John Larios as he was sacked six times. Nate Abbott led with 1.5 sacks to go along with 4 tackles. Veni Wolfgramm totaled 9 tackles and had a sack.
San Mateo will put its 26-game home winning streak on the line next Saturday (Oct. 25) when the Bulldogs host rival City College of San Francisco in a crucial Bay 6 League game. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. at College Heights Stadium.
