Bio

Kemit A. Mawakana brings a wealth of basketball experience and knowledge to the College of San Mateo Men’s Basketball program.  With over two decades of experience as a player and coach he has excelled at every level of basketball.

A native of Washington, D.C., he played on great undefeated high school teams winning the National Championship his senior year. After being selected a top 30 player in his class, Nike All-American, Parade All-American and winning a Silver Medal in the U.S. Olympic Festival he joined the Georgetown University Hoyas Men’s Basketball program where he won three Big East Championships in four years and made four NCAA Tournament appearances including winning a game against Princeton that Sports Illustrated deemed ”The Game That Saved March Madness.” As a senior he was co-captain of the Hoyas and named to the Big East All-Star team before a brief professional career in the N.B.A. (Washington Wizards) and internationally (France and Spain).

After his playing days ended, he earned a Juris Doctorate degree and an L.L.M. degree from Georgetown University Law Center. He practiced complex civil litigation and became a Law Professor. After moving to California, Coach Kemit returned to his “first love” basketball coaching his son’s middle school team (Ile Omode, Oakland, CA) to an undefeated season. He won numerous tournaments coaching nationally on the A.A.U. circuit, and is a professional skills trainer for up and coming athletes. Some of his coaching influences are Hall of Fame Coaches John B. McLendon (the inventor of the “fast break”) and legendary coach John Thompson (the first African-American coach to win a National Championship).
