Quigley-Borg gets milestone 700th victory; No. 1 CSM edges No. 7 Hartnell 2-1
SAN MATEO – College of San Mateo softball head coach Nicole Quigley-Borg achieved another milestone in her storybook coaching journey that continues to be written. On Thursday, her No. 1 state-ranked Bulldogs defeated No. 7 Hartnell College by a narrow 2-1 margin to give Quigley-Borg, as well as assistant coaches Toby Garza and Dale Bassman, career win No. 700 at the college.
It's a journey that began back in 2007 for the trio. Over that time, the program has averaged over 30 wins a season, has captured 11 conference championships, made a trip to the postseason each year, and brought home state titles in 2022 and 2025.
Thursday's victory ran the Bulldogs' winning streak to 39 games dating back to last season. CSM, the state's lone undefeated team, improved to 23-0 overall as well as 3-0 in the Coast Conference.
Katie Johnson and Nia Mapa smashed solo home runs to provide all the scoring the Bulldogs would need. Lola Sierra held Hartnell (21-4, 2-1 CC) scoreless for six innings before allowing a run in the seventh. But Mapa closed out the win, getting a line drive double play to end the threat and ball game.
CSM has been tested in its last two games against some of the state's best. On Tuesday, the Bulldogs handed No. 2 state-ranked West Valley College its first loss of the season with a 5-1 victory in Saratoga.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Tuesday (Mar. 17) when they host San Jose City College in a 3 p.m. Coast Conference game.
